Hankyu expo train 2024

In 2024, we took part in the Hankyu Expo Train project. Landscape designer, Toshiki Tanisaki, was challenged with decorating the inside of a train with plants. The project was designed to promote the upcoming Osaka Expo as well as commemorate the Osaka Expo of 1970.
The Expo train operated for one day, on one route. Various theatrical and musical performances took place as well as a market with local products sold by local people.

What is your proposal for the future? Ruled by technological advancements? Polluted and destroyed? Glittering with chrome? When Toshiki Tanisaki was asked to come up with a concept for a future train, he turned towards hope. What if, instead of the gloomy thoughts and feelings towards the future, plants and nature reclaimed the world as it did millennia ago?  Thus, the Green Train (or グリーン車) was born.

When one thinks of the future, images and ideas of bright metals, hard, cold textures and shining, white lights are often conjured up. The use of aluminum and clear, plastic plant pots and boxes play with this sci-fi concept that is often thought of when we hear the term 'future'. However, Tanisaki juxtaposes this sci-fi future with the use of indoor plant varieties, giving warmth to this cold idea of futurism. Ceramic and wood, both materials of the Earth, highlight this warmth and hopefulness that Tanisaki wishes to spread. In this way, Earth and Technology are mingling, complimenting each other and moving forward together.
